Custom Coding
Custom patterns are almost always done with Row Coding. If you haven’t already, read Row Coding & Column Coding to better understand these examples.
Broadly, there are 2 ways to code a knot:
- Using a repeating pattern such as O2U2.
- Using a fully coded pattern where each row or column is defined.
Repeating Patterns
Section titled “Repeating Patterns”This Gaucho Fan knot has locked bight edges. It uses repeating OUUO Row Coding:

Similarly, this locked-bight Gaucho Fan is using repeating OUUUOO Row Coding:

This knot is using repeating OUOOOUOUUU Row Coding:

Fully Coded Patterns
Section titled “Fully Coded Patterns”This knot looks similar to the ones above, but it does NOT have a repeating pattern. Instead, it is fully coded with OUUUOUOOOU Row Coding:

With row coding you can achieve different top and bottom edges. This knot is fully coded with OUOUOOOOUO Row Coding:

This nested knot is fully coded with OUOUOOOOUUUU Row Coding:
